Background: Sensory processing pattern is a unique characteristic in each human. Critical thinking is a well-known skill of successful individuals. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the critical thinking skills and sensory processing patterns of students of Medical Sciences. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 213 students (147 males and 66 females). Brown’s Adolescent and Adult Sensory Profile Questionnaire and Ricketts’ Critical Thinking Questionnaire were used for data collection. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 24) and appropriate statistical tests (i.e., the Pearson correlation test and independent samples t-test).Results: Critical thinking had a significant positive relationship with sensory sensitivity (r=0.229) and a significant inverse relationship with sensory seeking (r=-0.249) and low registration (r=-0.223). Critical thinking had a significant positive relationship with students’ grade point average (r=0.875). Additionally, there was no significant relationship between critical thinking with sensory avoidance (r=0.099) and age (r=0.847). In the sensory processing patterns, only low registration had a significant relationship with gender (P<0.05).Conclusion: Students whose dominant patterns of sensory processing were sensory sensitivity and sensory seeking had better and worse critical thinking skills than others, respectively. It seems necessary to pay attention to sensory processing patterns in students to develop their mental skills, especially critical thinking.

Background The lack of clinical competence in nurses leads to problems in providing nursing services. Studies indicate that nurses lacking the required skills can endanger the public health in medical centers. Critical thinking is a factor that can affect nurses' clinical competence. Objectives The current study aimed at investigating the relationship between critical thinking and clinical competence in nurses. Methods The current descriptive-analytical and cross sectional study was conducted on 120 nurses selected by random sampling method. Data collection tools included the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI), as well as clinical competence and demographic information questionnaires. Data were analyzed with SPSS using Pearson correlation coefficient, linear regression, and -test. Results Pearson correlation test showed a positive correlation between the total scores of critical thinking and clinical competence. Based on the results of the linear regression analysis, the tendency toward critical thinking could predict 28.4% of the clinical competence. The nurses mean CCTDI scores were at the positive level and their mean clinical competence scores were at the average level. Conclusions According to the obtained results, nursing authorities can organize practical workshops on the development of critical thinking of clinical nurses as one of the most important and operational strategies to improve nursing clinical competence and, ultimately, move towards optimal care.

Background Students’ personal characteristics are among the factors influencing the development of their critical thinking. Self-esteem is a normal influencing personality trait. Self-esteem affects all the aspects of individuals’ lives including the way of their thinking and performance. Objectives Therefore, the current study aimed to determine the relationship between critical thinking disposition and self-esteem in the midwifery students of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 2014. Methods This cross sectional study was carried out on all bachelor students (N = 53) of the Mashhad Nursing and Midwifery Faculty. Data were collected through a personal information form, the Rosenberg’s self-esteem questionnaire, and the California critical thinking disposition questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS through descriptive statistical methods and a Pearson correlation coefficient test. Results The vast majority of students (62.26%) had an unsteady critical thinking disposition. However, 84.90% of them had a moderate level of self-esteem. Pearson correlation test showed no significant relationship between critical thinking disposition and self-esteem (P > 0.05). Conclusions According to the study results, the vast majority of the study cases had a moderate level of self-esteem with an unsteady critical thinking disposition. There was no significant relationship between critical thinking disposition and self-esteem in the studied midwifery students.

Background & Objective : Developments in science and technology together with rapid obsolescence in findings and previous information necessitates a type of education in which students are continuously engaged in learning and problem solving and enjoy interfacing changes This study was aimed to assess critical thinking in students of virtual and traditional education Methods : In this crosssectional study two groups including 40 senior computer students from Shiraz University (virtual education) and 40 ones from Islamic Azad University (traditional education) participated Data was collected using Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Test including 80 questions in five subscales including inference recognition of assumptions deduction interpretation and evaluation of arguments Results : The mean score ( ± SD) of critical thinking which was 3677( ± 359) in virtual education happened to be higher than traditional educations mean score which was 3515( ± 694) while there was no significant difference In all five subscales of critical thinking the mean score of interpretation skill was significantly higher in virtual education (79) compared to 695 for traditional education (p=00001) Conclusion : Considering improvements of critical thinking in virtual education and according to its multiple advantages like adding to ones self confidence self esteem and independent learning it is suggested to use this type of education alongside the traditional method or as a replacement for teaching theoretical lessons in university courses
