Background: Individuals engaged in education and health currently during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic find it urgent to avail themselves of high-speed communication and information technology. Objectives: This survey was conducted to investigate the attitudes of environmental and occupational health students toward Social Media (SM) use in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study which its population consisted of 375 environmental and occupational health students studying at Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Kerman, Iran, in the academic year 2020-2021. The present study followed a quantitative design using the Social Media Attitude Scale designed by Otrar and Argin. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 26) and paired t-test.Results: The participants were within the age range of 18-46 years, and 64.8% of them were female. Instagram was the most popular SM (frequency of use: 40%). Twitter (27%), Facebook (20%), and LinkedIn (13%) were placed in the next ranks. The need for sharing (61.4±14.93) was the most preferred dimension of SM. Social competence (54.23±5.17), social isolation (51.33±4.43), and relationship with teachers (40.63±9.7) were placed in the next ranks. Moreover, there was no significant difference between environmental and occupational health students’ attitudes toward SM (P>0.01).Conclusion: Medical universities can use SM for educational purposes by designing a forum for study or helping students with health skills. However, researchers should be aware of health science students’ attitudes toward SM before developing such programs.

Background One of the most effective ways to prevent substance abuse is to promote addiction knowledge in influential social groups. Objectives The purpose of this study was to identify the current status of substance abuse education in medical universities of Iran in order to develop a targeted curriculum on drug abuse and include it in the curriculum of medical students. Methods In this descriptive library study, documentary (library) method and checklists were used for data collection. In order to identify the extent to which the existing units and courses deal with substance abuse and with the subject of addiction, the announced titles for active disciplines of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education were reviewed in 2017 - 2018. Results Of the 7685.5 units taught in different faculties of medical sciences universities in all disciplines except clinical residency programs.106.1% (optional or mandatory) are related to substance abuse. Of these, 49.5 units were related to the pathophysiology, treatment and pharmacology of substances, and 57.6 units covered topics related to prevention strategies and pathologies of substance abuse. Conclusions Despite the high importance of substance abuse issues for medical sciences students, a general unit for prevention and familiarity with the physical, psychological and social consequences of substance abuse does not exist in most of these disciplines. Therefore, it is recommended that studies be conducted to provide specific courses related to the substance abuse phenomenon or to consider substance abuse topics in the courses related to this subject.

Background Today, information technology and communications play an important role in the promotion of education quality. Some pedagogical studies have been conducted with a focus on electronic learning. This study aims to evaluate the level and distribution of articles on electronic-learning of medical sciences in the Iranian journals of medical sciences. Methods To collect data, English- and Persian-language scientific-research journals in medical sciences published from 2011 to the end of 2015 were evaluated. Titles, keywords, and methods were searched in the most reliable journals to extract articles in line with the study objectives. The data were analyzed based on descriptive statistics using Excel software. Results According to the results of the current study, only 1 journal allocated more than 10% (14.6% of all evaluated articles) of its published articles to e-learning in medical sciences (totally 14.6%). The highest ratio of articles on e-learning in medical education to the total articles was found in the Iranian Bimonthly of Education Strategies in Medical Sciences (0.146) and strides in development of Medical Education (0.094); and the lowest ratio was found in the Journal of Advances in Medical Education and Professionalism (0.31). Conclusions Limitations such as hardware and software infrastructures, as well as lack of interest and time by professors were considered as barriers to study electronic skills and technology sciences and their institutionalization within the curriculum.

Background & Objective: Recognition of the causes and correlates of academic failure which is one of the failures of the education system is an important practical issue in education researches Despite the large number of studies in this field in Iran no comprehensive reviews of all published documents in this respect have been carried out Thus the aim of the present study was the systematic review of all texts published during the previous 15 years and determination of the role of individual personality and social factors related to academic failure of students Methods: In the present study documents were systematically reviewed and information gathered Articles which were related to the causes of academic failure of students of medical universities in Iran and published from March 1999 until February 2010 were studied Using census method 1008 articles were screened The full text of 26 articles with minimum quality of research was available Results: Based on the findings of the study male gender higher age of entry to college marriage mental and physical problems lack of interest in the field of education lower average score of school diploma or previous degree longer duration of time from diploma to university admission lack of studying during the term greater use of the internet and lack of scientific and research activities are individual factors that can lead to academic failure in students Based on the systematic review of literature the causes of academic failure of students were having a second job living in the dormitory and a nonempirical diploma Among familial and social factors low education level of father and mother financial problems family problems large number of family members poor social activity and being an extrovert were associated with academic failure Conclusion: Despite the many studies on the causes of academic failure it seems that the standards and definitions used in different studies vary Therefore to promote the quality of work standardization must be performed The views of faculty members were largely consistent with the facts found in the literature This showed that university teachers experiences in this regard are reliable Moreover considering the major listed causes it seems that groups who are at higher risk of academic failure can be identified and preventive measures applied to them

Background & Objective: Critical thinking skills are among the skills that have been recognized for the 21st century human being by UNESCO On the other hand stress plays an important role in success and excessive stress can decrease students ability to learn and progress This study was performed to evaluate critical thinking skills and their association with stress coping strategies in the students of Arak University of Medical Sciences Iran Methods: In this analytical crosssectional study 100 medical students were selected through stratified sampling SPSS software was used to analyze the data collected via a demographic checklist WatsonGlaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA)and Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Lazarus and Folkman) Results: The mean total score of critical thinking skills was 3732 ± 571 which was categorized as weak Moreover the mean score of stress coping strategies was 9095 ± 188 There was no significant correlation between the two mean scores There was only a weak significant correlation between avoidance with interpretation and responsibility with rationalization (P < 005) Conclusion: The mean score of critical thinking skills of our participants did not differ significantly from that of other similar domestic studies but was unsatisfactory when compared to foreign studies This shows the necessity of the education of the critical thinking skills in the national education system The insignificant correlation between critical thinking and stress coping strategies could be the result of the questionnaire used and students wrong estimation of their critical thinking skills and coping strategies
