Background & Objective: Due to the increasing development of knowledge and constant encountering of new dimensions of modern treatmentcare procedures the ability to use selfdirected learning methods is considered as an important professional competency for midwifery students Thus evaluation of factors effective on the selfdirected learning procedure is of grave importance The aim of this study was to determine the readiness of midwifery students of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences Iran for selfdirected learning and identify its effective factors Methods: In this descriptive analytical study 170 undergraduate and masters students in midwifery and PhD students in reproductive health participated Data gathering instruments included Fishers SelfDirected Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) and the Effective Factors on SelfDirected Learning Inventory Data were analyzed using SPSS software and descriptive and inferential statistical methods Results: The mean age of the participants was 2403 ± 571 years In addition 707% of students had high scores in SDLRS There were significant differences in students SDLRS scores based on educational degree age degree of interest in the educational field marital status and occupation (P < 005) Conclusion: The results showed that individuals at risk of low selfdirected learning capability can be identified based on degree of interest in their educational field age marital status and occupation

Background & Objective : In a clinical environment where students learn their professions practical skills and become acquainted with their future roles and responsibilities having a capable and effective clinical instructor is vital to assure an appropriate atmosphere for learning and applying skills and organizing learning in a clinical environment This study aimed to determine the characteristics of an effective instructor according to nursing & midwifery students and instructors point of view Methods : In this qualitative phenomenological study 30 students and 8 instructors of nursing and midwifery in Gorgan University of Medical Sciences were selected using purposive sampling method Data was collected using semi structured deep and interactive interviews They were analyzed using an approach recommended by Collaizi Results : The analysis of documents revealed three common concepts of characteristics of an effective clinical instructor according to the students and instructors point of view They included practical and scientific competencies educational management competencies and good behavior Participants also mentioned a variety of issues as inhibitors for effectiveness of an instructor and clinical learning The most important of them were lack of enough facilities old educational centers a paternalistic state created by medical doctors in educational centers and reluctance of nursing students to their career Conclusion : Our findings suggest that a systematic and alternative thinking is essential for improvement of a clinical education setting The enhancement of the instructors theoretical and clinical skills should accompany physical structural and qualitative changes of educational centers

Background & Objective : Students at university are always exposed to a lot of psychological problems during their education due to experiencing new problems and different stresses Thus teaching life skills was added to medical and midwifery freshmens curriculum for the first time in Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences in 2006This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of the aforementioned program on the students knowledge and attitude to life skills and their psychosocial capabilities improvement Methods : In this quasiexperimental study cases were 51 medical and midwifery freshmen and control group included 42 medical and midwifery students who were in their second semester Data was collected using a questionnaire which its validity and reliability were confirmed Results : The mean scores of the students knowledge and attitude increased significantly in cases in comparison to controls (719 in contrast to 466 P=00001 and 874 in contrast to 590 P=00001 respectively) According to two way ANOVA field of study did not influence on the efficacy of education regarding students knowledge and attitude Mean score of psychosocial capabilities increased significantly only in cases of midwifery group compared to their control group (2475 in contrast to 2014 with p=00001) Conclusion : Teaching life skills to students in a systematic and organized way in a form of single unit course had a significant effect on improvement of students knowledge and attitude to life skills and psychosocial capabilities It is obvious that education should continue for at least one year in order to have constant results

Background & Objective : Passing through intrauterine phase to the extra uterine world is probably the most risky event in everybodys life About 1% of them need advanced cardiac life support to continue life By implementing professional methods of resuscitation the prognosis will improve more than one million neonatal deaths annually This study was designed to assess the effect of education on midwifery students neonatal resuscitation knowledge and skill Methods : In this interventional (pretest and posttest design) study 81 midwifery students participated The data was collected using a questionnaire for assessing knowledge and a check list for skill evaluation The validity and reliability of the questionnaire and the check list were approved before data collection Results : Our findings showed that all students level of knowledge was weak to moderate before education while it turned into good after education Mean knowledge score before education was 2446 which increased to 2934 after education Skill related mean score before and after education was 1383 and 9175 respectively Comparison between knowledge and skill related scores showed significant difference before and after education (p=0003 and p=00001 respectively) Conclusion : Midwifery students knowledge and skill in neonatal resuscitation was low before education and there was a significant difference in mentioned items before and after education Considering the effect of resuscitation in decreasing neonatal death index implementation of scientific and practical education using developed techniques and tools is necessary

Background: Nowadays since a hard educational competition can be seen among students exam anxiety is increasing Anxiety causes concentration deviation so that data processing will decrease Also previous studies have shown pessimistic thoughts make the students to expect failure so that the student can not concentrate on the exam and as a result he will not get a positive result Objective: To determine the level of students exam anxiety in Fatemeh (PBUH) College of Nursing and Midwifery Methods: This analytic descriptive study was done on 317 students educating in Fatemeh College of Nursing and Midwifery A questionnaire consisting of 24 background questions and Spilbergers anxiety test with 32 questions were used to gather the data These questionnaires were given to the students in the exam salon before the final exam Measures of central tendency dispersion index ttest and one way ANOVA were used to analyze the data Results: The findings showed that 909% of the students had anxiety in low level 64% had in medium level and 17% had a high level anxiety The mean ( ± standard deviation) of exam anxiety of the students was 2576% (±1659) The mean (±standard deviation) of exam anxiety among the nursing students was 252 (±1645) and among the midwifery students it was 2678 (±169) but no significant difference was found between exam anxiety in terms of major (P>005) A significant difference was observed in anxiety level in terms of sex marital status parents education and the number of siblings Conclusion: Using consultation strategies and making a friendly intervention between students and teachers is recommended for the students with high level of test anxiety to identify the problems and try to solve them To relieve anxiety consultation interventions by specialists relaxation using comics and jokes in exams will be helpful
