Background & Objective: Evaluation of academic staff is conducted in different ways One of these methods which are commonly applied nowadays is asking students (the only group that experience the direct effect of teaching during the course) about their opinions Hence this study was conducted to present the students viewpoints about the evaluation of academic staffs performance using evaluation forms Methods: In this qualitative using phenomenology 40 students of nursing midwifery medicine and allied health sciences from different semesters were participated in individual semistructured interviews and group discussions in order to understand their viewpoints and experiences about evaluation of academic staff in theoretical courses The interviews were taperecorded and transcribed verbatim The data was analyzed using the content analysis method Results: Our findings suggest that although the students are in agreement with evaluating the academic staff they are reluctant to fill in the forms and stated that the current situation is not satisfactory Change relativity a student as a judge noneffective time open doors effective question and noneffective question represent students viewpoints and experiences about evaluating academic staff in theoretical courses using evaluation forms The participants emphasized the evaluation should be used as a positive reinforcement for improving education quality Conclusion: Academic staff is the main elements in students learning and could act inhibitors and facilitators By teaching evaluation one can make changes or corrections in further programs Meanwhile creative interventions are essential to satisfy students

Background & Objective : To assess the characteristics of a good teacher one must inquire the teachers opinion in addition to the students Hence this study was aimed to determine the characteristics of effective teachers and pertinent effective educational factors according to the nursing teachers and students point of view in schools of nursing in Kerman University of Medical Sciences Methods : In t his descriptivecomparative study 358 students and 89 teachers from Kerman Bam Zarand and Jiroft schools of nursing participated Data was collected using a researchermade questionnaire which covered five domains Results : A ccording to the students point of view interpersonal communication teaching skill personal characteristics evaluation skill and educational rules were priorities in order of importance whereas teachers gave priority to teaching skill educational rules evaluation skill personal characteristics and interpersonal communication The importance of interpersonal communication and personal characteristics according to the students opinion was significantly higher than what teachers believed (P=00001 and P=004 respectively) However the importance of teaching skill and educational rules was significantly higher in teachers opinion when compared to the students (P=00001 in both cases) Lack of enough time to study was the most important effective factor in teachers efficacy regarding the opinion of both teachers and students Conclusion : Despite the big difference between the teachers and the students point of view it is suggested to consider improvement of communication skills together with modern teaching methods in teachers empowerment programs Educational managers should also direct their programs to gain a better background for studying learning and efficacy with a decrease in working hours

Background & Objective: To ensure students research experience acquisition is o ne of the most important goals of conducting a thesis In such a process evaluating students satisfaction is one of the most significant challenges Hence this research was aimed to study students satisfaction of thesis conducting process and its related factors in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences Methods: In this survey 100 medical dentistry and pharmacy students who were becoming graduates and were about to defend their thesis participated Samples were selected using stratified sampling Data was collected using a questionnaire which its reliability and validity were already confirmed Results: According to the results mean (±SD) of supervision on thesis scientific skill development research bases skill development of research and thesis assessing process were 331(±095) 342(±071) 226(±080) 337(±070) and 347(±092) respectively The mean score of research bases was significantly less than others (P= 00001) The mean score of female students satisfaction of research bases and developing research skill was significantly higher than male students (P= 0026 and 004 respectively) Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that the lowest students satisfaction belonged to “scientific seminar planning” “financial support of scientific activities” and “scientific and research atmosphere” all belonged to research bases As research infra structure and atmosphere are important factors in research activities they should be among priorities of higher education planning

Background & Objective : Since 2003 University Open Day (UOD) is being held in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences to introduce the Universitys capacities and help students become familiar and finally select a study field This study aimed to evaluate students point of view about the effect of UOD on selecting field of study in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences Methods : In this descriptive crosssectional study a selfdirected questionnaire was distributed amongst students of all study fields and educational levels including technicians bachelors medicine dentistry and pharmacy in entrance years 2003 to 2007 in their classrooms Results : Among 940 students of entrance years 2003 to 2007 in all fields and educational levels only 218 (23%) had visited the UOD Most of them (60%) declared the reason that they chose their field was their matriculation score alone or together with other factors 27 percent (the minority) believed that the guidance provided by UOD attending authorities was a contributing factor to select a field The majority (635%) demonstrated that parents contributed to field selection while 05% chose the guidance provided by UOD attending authorities as a contributing factor 36 percent of students declared that they chose the University due to being close to their hometown or family and only 2 (1%) declared that the guidance provided by UOD attending authorities affected their choice Conclusion : According to the results of this study and costs of holding this program revisions should be made in following years and UOD should be held in other forms

Background & Objective : One of the most important factors which prevent students from achieving their attempts desirable result is lack of study skills Study skills are effective on decreasing tiredness and anxiety saving time and increasing students motivation leading to better learning and educational improvement This study was conducted to evaluate the students study skills and to determine educational priorities in order to hold improving study skills classes Methods : In this descriptive study all bachelor students in Yazd school of public health (240 students) participated Data was collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire 192 questionnaires were completed and returned Results : According to our findings the mean (±SD) score of all 30 study skills was 201(±42) The highest mean score (±SD) which was 51(±12) belonged to taking class notes while the lowest mean score which was 26(±13) belonged to time management Most of the students study skills were of moderate level (547 %) and 307% were weak whereas only 307% were considered good The mean daily studying duration was 25 hours There was no significant statistical relationship between study skills and age sex field of study semester doing morning or evening courses daily studying duration and Grade Point Average of the previous term Conclusion : As only 307% of all students were considered good regarding study skills it is suggested to hold organized and continuous educational courses to improve study skills Defined factors in this study are time management taking exam concentration reading and taking notes in order of priority

Background & Objective : Consultation is an effective factor in solving students problems Providing insufficient guidance and consultation may prevent achieving educational goals This study was conducted to evaluate students points of view about faculty members performance in providing consultation and educational guidance Kerman University of Medical Sciences Methods: In this crosssectional study senior students of all fields in 6 schools of Kerman University of Medical Sciences (490 members) were asked to fill in a researchermade questionnaire which its validity and reliability were already confirmed Results : According to the students point of view among maximum score of 4 the highest mean score belonged to “signing and controlling course selection and other forms” (347) This was followed by “presence of the consultant professor in announced hours” (319) and “speaking with students about educational rules” (315) The least scores were given to “analysis of educational slump” “encouraging students to correct educational pitfalls” and “analysis of educational improvement” (23 235 and 24 accordingly) Only 207% of the students completely knew in what fields and how to get help from their consultant professor 234 percent believed that lack of enough consultation led to their educational problems while 243% were not satisfied with consultation at all Conclusion : Our findings showed that students and faculty members are not familiar with consultant professors duties and consultation Probably consultant professors dont do their duties appropriately To improve the quality of consultation and guidance it is necessary to consider consultation as a scientific entity which needs education and a scientifically competent responsible

Background & Objective : Promoting quality of clinical education necessitates continuous evaluation of the current situations identifying strengths and improving weaknesses This study was designed to assess clinical education status according to the nursing and midwifery students point of view in Tehran University of Medical Sciences Methods : In this descriptive study which was conducted in 20045 all senior nursing students who were doing a Bachelor of Science and senior midwifery students who were doing technicians Course (250 students) were asked to complete a 36 item questionnaire in a selfadministered way Results : The most important strengths of clinical education (according to mean scores) were “on time presence of the student in the ward” (8906) then “on time presence of the instructor in the ward” (8505) “considering the prerequisite clerkship courses” (825) “proper instructors behavior with students” (741) “clinical instructors interest in working” (7392) and “instructors clinical track record” (731) The most significant weaknesses of clinical education were related to “use of audiovisual aids in clinical atmosphere” (984) “enough number of students in the ward” (1491) and “having facilities” (1968) Conclusion : Although some aspects of clinical education were good and excellent improving positive aspects and modifying the weaknesses may be an effective step in promoting quality of clinical education Repetitive assessments of clinical fields and comparing the current situation with the previous or next ones can reveal the strengths and weaknesses of clinical education

Background & Objective : Libraries are among main parts of universities as libraries of high quality lead to improvement in education and research within universities and the society Assessing quality of services in educational systems is important to improve quality of provided services This study was conducted to assess the quality of services provided by the central library of Kerman University of Medical Sciences from the faculty members and students point of view Methods : In this study 200 faculty members and students of Kerman University of Medical Sciences were chosen using stratified random sampling The data was collected using LibQUAL+TM standard questionnaire after its validity and reliability were confirmed Results : Our findings showed that the mean score of general satisfaction of the central librarys provided services was 613 out of 9 Among the three aspects of library service quality information control was the most satisfactory factor (598) which was followed by efficacy of services (596) and the librarys atmosphere (589) Faculty members were more satisfied with the central librarys provided services in all aspects compared to students although this difference was not significant The most frequent referral to the central library and using references was once a month Conclusion : Although the findings of this study were suggestive of faculty members and students relative satisfaction of provided services improving quality of services necessitates better and more organized planning Improvement of library service quality can lead to promoting faculty members and students scientific level in universities of medical sciences medical knowledge and medical education

Background & Objective: Internship is an important and basic element in each field especially health care management A great deal of students knowledge is put into practice during this period Evaluation of internship status is necessary for improving its quality This study was performed to evaluate the health care management internship status in several aspects based on students and teachers point of view Methods: In this descriptiveanalytic study 102 health care management teachers and students from Isfahan University participated The data was collected using a researcher made questionnaire in which the general internship lessons status learning process learners teachers internship fields were included Results : The mean given scores after evaluation by teachers and students were 3936 (considered as good) and 2806 (considered as moderate) respectively The result of analysis showed that the weakest aspect of internship according to the students point of view was internship fields (hospital and health care centers) with a mean score of 226 and the weakest point according to the teachers point of view was about the learners (334) Teachers believed that the biggest problem was due to the transportation system ( =25) whereas students believed it to be due to lack of information by health care personnel about educational needs ( =1843) Conclusion : Internship lessons esp in internship fields which were given the least score by attendants need more attention In order to improve the situation of internship it is recommended to provide more facilities during internship period and focus on familiarizing briefing and attracting health care personnel

Background & Objective : One of the greatest problems of the present century is the uncontrolled increase in population and control of this increase is among the most important priorities of every society if it is to achieve the goals of health and development Proper education via creating a change in individuals attitudes and way of thinking is considered as a basic step in achieving the goals of family planning The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of family planning course presented in universities on knowledge and attitude of students toward contraceptive methods Methods : This quasiexperimental study (beforeafter) performed on 234 female students of Islamic Azad University/Abadan branch who attended the population and family planning course in the first semester of the academic year 20052006 Subjects were selected by nonrandom and convenience sampling Data were collected using a questionnaire distributed once before and once after attending the family planning course Results : According to the results 661% of the students were in the age range of 2024 years 117% were married 177% were employed and 836% were students of associate degree and 164% bachelor degree Mean (±SD) knowledge score of students was 365(±179) before the course that raised to 889(±26) after the course (P=0001) Mean (±SD) attitude score of students before the intervention was 588(±199) that rose to 727(±201) after the intervention (p=0003) Conclusion : Based on the results of this study family planning programs should be based on training since an increase in awareness and attitude of people resulting from efficient educational programs paves the way for using safe contraceptive methods and change of reproductive behaviors

Background: Higher education is growing fast and every day it is more and more exposed to the globalization processes The quality of educational Services with emphasis on students satisfaction is a newly emerging field of concern Objective : This study was carried out to determine the quality gap of educational services based on students perceptions and expectations in Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences Methods: In this crosssectional study 300 students were selected randomly and asked to fill out a questionnaire designed according to SERVQUAL method This questionnaire measures students perceptions and expectations in five dimensions of educational services including assurance responsiveness empathy reliability and tangibles Quality gap of educational services was determined by calculating the difference between students perceptions and expectations Results: According to the results there were negative quality gaps in all of the five dimensions The greatest gap (114) was in responsiveness dimension followed respectively by empathy (095) assurance (089) tangibles (084) and reliability (071) There were significant differences among the means of quality gap in all of the five domains (p=00001) Conclusion: Negative quality gap of educational services indicates that students expectations are more than their perceptions and in none of the studied dimensions students perceptions have met their expectations Thus in planning for the improvement of educational services quality students expectations especially in the dimensions with higher negative gaps should be considered as priority

Background : Suitable nutrition is an important aspect in every stage of life particularly in puberty stage of females One of the important priorities of medical education is improving the quality of educational programs in regard to the puberty nutrition in middle school girls Objective: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the effects of three teaching methods of lecture training games and role playing on knowledge and practice of middle school girls in regard to puberty nutrition Methods : In this quasiexperimental research six first grade classes from girls middle schools of four distracts in Mashhad were selected randomly The students of these classes (n=174) were randomly divided into three groups of lecture (taught by giving lecture) game (taught by playing games) and role playing (taught by role playing) Each group participated in two 45minute training sessions about puberty nutrition The students knowledge and practice were evaluated by acceptable valid and reliable questionnaire and checklist before immediately after and one month after the training sessions Results : According to the results mean (±standard deviation) knowledge scores of students immediately after intervention were 499 (±115) in lecture group 57 (±89) in game group and 61 (±12) in role playing group that showed significant increase [respectively 201 (±116) 29 (±11) and 305 (±115)] compared to before the intervention Mean knowledge score immediately after and one month after holding training sessions were significantly different in all three groups (P

Background: Every one has a preferred style of learning Although teachers should adapt their teaching method with their students learning styles it seems that in most cases this fact is disregarded which in turn may decrease the quality of teaching and consequently educational goals Objective: To determine the learning styles of paramedical students in Kashan University of Medical Sciences Methods: In this descriptive analytical study 130 nursing midwifery and allied health students were investigated For data collection a standardized questionnaire according to Joy Ried model was used The questionnaire consisted of 30 questions in six learning domains of visual tactile auditory group learning individual learning and class participation and was justified by Likert scoring scale Results: From 130 participants 323% were male and 677% were female and 454% were nursing students 40% were health students and 146% were midwifery students Minimum mean score (292) and maximum mean score (387) were respectively related to group learning and class participation There was no significant difference in learning style scores based on sex and field of study Conclusion: Considering the obtained results showing the variety of learning styles and their differences all teachers are advised to avoid limiting their teaching method to just one method and to use various techniques compatible with the type of teaching materials

Background: Practical training of medical students is not limited to only hospitals Outpatient departments and ambulatory care centers attending a greater number of patients can provide students with more exposure to a variety of medical cases Moreover communityoriented medical education centre where more patients come for consultation is a suitable centre for training medical students Although awareness toward the importance of communityoriented medical education is increasing and medical faculties have already adopted this approach for their training this idea does not appear to be accepted fully in all of schools Objective: To find the attitude of Zanjan Medical students and teachers towards education and facilities in COME centre in 20042005 Methods: In this descriptive study two separate questionnaires for teachers and students were designed to assess their attitudes towards the method of education number of patients situation of centre and the quality of education in the Communityoriented Medical Education centers The questionnaires were filled out by 136 interns and externs who had been trained in COME centre and 14 teachers in Zanjan Medical University Validity of questionnaires had been confirmed and internal consistency reliability had been determined by Cronbachs alpha coefficient (079) Results: In whole 669% of the students and 538% of the teachers were interested in attending COME program and most of them believed that COME is necessary for medical education The percentage of interns who agreed with this center was more than externs In regard to the teachers educational method the highest satisfaction rate (832%) was obtained for teachers in the pediatrics ward (p=00005) In regard to the number and variety of patients pediatrics ward (with respectively 717% and 656%) was the best and internal ward (with respectively 207% and 215%) was the worst ward according to the students The overall satisfaction rate was 519 ± 125 in students and interns had a more positive attitude comparing to others Discussion: It seems that using more experienced teachers continuous supervision and evaluation of educational activities establishing proper research facilities and financial support of COME centers are necessary for improving communityoriented medical education

Teaching is an interpersonal activity an interaction based on the verbal communication which is inclined to learning or change of behavioral methods in one or more students and it is considered as a Process Although some essential specifications such as process interaction intention are involved answering to the following three essential questions seems not to be easy: 1 What is Teaching? 2 Who are Participating in a Teaching Activity? 3 What is the role of each person in a Teaching Activity?
