Background: Sensory processing pattern is a unique characteristic in each human. Critical thinking is a well-known skill of successful individuals. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the critical thinking skills and sensory processing patterns of students of Medical Sciences. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 213 students (147 males and 66 females). Brown’s Adolescent and Adult Sensory Profile Questionnaire and Ricketts’ Critical Thinking Questionnaire were used for data collection. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 24) and appropriate statistical tests (i.e., the Pearson correlation test and independent samples t-test).Results: Critical thinking had a significant positive relationship with sensory sensitivity (r=0.229) and a significant inverse relationship with sensory seeking (r=-0.249) and low registration (r=-0.223). Critical thinking had a significant positive relationship with students’ grade point average (r=0.875). Additionally, there was no significant relationship between critical thinking with sensory avoidance (r=0.099) and age (r=0.847). In the sensory processing patterns, only low registration had a significant relationship with gender (P<0.05).Conclusion: Students whose dominant patterns of sensory processing were sensory sensitivity and sensory seeking had better and worse critical thinking skills than others, respectively. It seems necessary to pay attention to sensory processing patterns in students to develop their mental skills, especially critical thinking.

Background It is claimed that role-playing is a teaching strategy that has several advantages for both the teacher and student. This study aimed to compare two educational methods (oral presentation, a traditional method that is known to be teacher-centered, versus role-playing which is a student-centered method). Methods This quasi-experimental study was performed between September 2013 and October 2014 in 95 medical students in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Role-playing and oral (plus Microsoft PowerPoint) presentation were done by one assistant professor. There were no changes in the educational content nor the classroom. Using random numbers, half of each group received one of the methods as the first class and vice versa. At the end of each session, the standard satisfaction evaluating questionnaire was filled by the students. Results During the one-year duration of this study, 95 students were evaluated, and 46 (60%) of them were female. The mean age was 22.5 ± 1 years, and 28 (87.5%) were single. Role-playing had a mean rank of 54.64, and oral presentation had 21.45 (P < 0.001). This difference was present based on gender as well (P < 0.001). The satisfaction score was significantly higher for role-playing (P < 0.001). Conclusions Role-playing can be much more helpful in education and needs to be incorporated into the lesson plans.

Background and Objective: In order to promote quality of education, teaching performances of all academic staff are evaluated by students every semester. This study aims to address the changing trend of staff scores in different semesters, and factors affecting it, in Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran, using multilevel modeling. Moreover, the results were compared to that of simple linear regression modeling.
Methods: In the present analytical study, the scores of 336 academic staff of Kerman University of Medical Sciences during 2008 to 2012 were extracted from the students’ monitoring website. The tutor’s code was used for the identification of their scores in different semesters and was entered into the multilevel models. In order to investigate the effects of gender, work experience (in years), school (seven schools), and academic rank (master, assistant professor, associate professor, professor), the simple regression and multilevel models were compared. To study the significance of the random intercepts, the likelihood ratio test was used. In addition, to study the goodness of fit of the models, the Akaike information criteria (AIC), Bayesian information criteria (BIC), and the mean squared error (MSE) were used.
Results: The results showed that time had a significant positive impact on the improvement of staff scores. However, the scores of male and female staff were not significantly different. The scores of professors were significantly higher than assistant professors. In addition, the score of dental school staff was significantly higher than that of medical school staff. The comparison of the goodness of fit of models showed that the multilevel modeling provided a better fit to the longitudinal data. In the linear regression model, variables such as work experience and academic rank (professors in comparison to assistant professors and nursing school staff in comparison to pharmacology school staff) were falsely considered significant, due to the lack of consideration of the dependence of longitudinal observations of the evaluation and correction of standard errors.
Conclusion: The multilevel model, due to the consideration of the dependence of longitudinal observations of the evaluation, provides a better fit to data. Moreover, the incorrect use of the linear regression model, considering longitudinal observations to be independent, led to erroneous conclusions. The results of the present study, in terms of the goodness of fit of the models, showed a positive trend in scores of academic staff of Kerman University of Medical Sciences. In other words, the scores have improved over time.
