Background A universal challenge in the development of medical training methods is the description and characteristics of a good physician. It is essential to collect the information of hospitalized patients and their families in order to revise the curricula of medical departments. Objectives The present study aimed to explain the viewpoints of patients and their families about the key characteristics of a good physician. Methods The present study was carried out using inductive content analysis in 2017. The study sample consisted of patients admitted to different wards of Imam Khomeini Hospital (Tehran, Iran), as well as family members accompanying the patients. Data were collected via purposeful sampling (maximum variation sampling) by conducting semi-structured interviews until reaching data saturation. After the recorded interviews were transcribed, they were reviewed several times and analyzed using Elo and Kyngas coding system. Results A total of 19 participants, including 13 patients and six accompanying family members, were recruited in the present study (11 males and 8 females). The analysis of interviews with the participants indicated seven major categories: “Positive personality traits”; “academic and clinical proficiency”; “professionalism”; “effective communication skills”; “fairness and altruism”; “spirituality”; and “continuous professional development”. Conclusions The definition of a good physician by patients and their families has different implications in educational programs, as future physicians not only can benefit from education about the medical needs of their patients, but also should be familiar with the needs, fears, and concerns of their patients.

Background Dental students are exposed to various stressors that are related to treatment procedures, training, and administrative challenges in the college. Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the stress, anxiety, and depression levels of dental students and their relationships with demographic factors. Methods This was a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study on 297 dental students enrolled at the Kerman University of Medical Science in 2015 - 2016. The stress, anxiety, and depression levels were measured using the depression anxiety stress scale-21 (DASS-21). Data on demographic characteristics were also obtained. The statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS (version 11.0) using the chi-squared test. P < 0.05 was set as the level of significance. Results The mean age of the participants was 23.80 ± 1.2 years; 58.9% were female, 88.9% were married, and 33.7% were dormitory students. Free education was provided for 64% of the students while the others were charged a tuition fee. The prevalence rates of moderate to extremely severe levels of stress, anxiety, and depression were 39.7%, 39.4%, and 35.7%, respectively. Stress, anxiety, and depression were not significantly associated with the year of academic study, gender, marital status, and place of residence (P > 0.05). The students with higher scores in the entrance exam who were free of charge presented significantly higher levels of severe-to-extremely severe stress and depression (P = 0.003 and P = 0.033, respectively) than students who were charged tuition fees. Conclusions Based on the findings of the present study, the high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among dental students in Kerman is alarming. This emphasizes the need for interventions, with the development of appropriate support services for this group. However, further studies should be conducted to find major sources of depression, anxiety, and stress.

Background According to most students, neuroanatomy is difficult to learn. Although different approaches have been suggested for learning neuroanatomical correlations, it seems that none have been effective in aiding learning of afferent and efferent connections. The aim of this study was to develop an innovative method that will facilitate learning of afferent and efferent nervous system connections. Methods A total of 140 medical students at the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences participated in the current study, of which 69 subjects were trained using traditional methods (control group). An innovative method was employed for the remaining 71 subjects (intervention group). In the intervention group, a name and figure were first allocated to each of the nervous system structures in a way that would remind students of the origin of the structure. The students created 3-part names for the allocated structures that were, if possible, humorous. The first part was the alternative name for the structure, and the second and third parts were the alternative names for afferent and efferent structures. The students learned the afferent and efferent connections through the phrases. Each group passed a 12-item pretest and posttest. Results of the tests were analyzed with SPSS using the paired t-test; P ≤ 0.05 was considered to be significant. Results There was no significant difference in the pretest scores between the study groups (control: 1.64 ± 0.86; intervention: 1.60 ± 0.89; P = 0.40). The posttest score of the intervention group (8.15 ± 1.16) was significantly higher than that of the control (3.75 ± 0.077; P < 0.001). Conclusions An innovative method can facilitate student learning of afferent and efferent nervous system connections.

Background Assisting teachers to modify and improve their method of teaching is among the main goals of teachers’ evaluations. The current study aimed to psychometrically evaluate the teaching performance evaluation questionnaire in Urmia University of Medical Sciences, Urmia, Iran. Methods The original 28-item scale was scored based on a Likert scale obtained from former studies and was translated into Persian after obtaining permission from the designer. Then, the impact item score, content validity index (CVI), and content validity ratio (CVR) of the questionnaire were assessed by 11 experts, and its structural validity was also evaluated using exploratory factor analysis. The reliability of the scale was also assessed by its internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Results The reference version included 28 items, 23 of which were translated into Persian based on the impact factor 1.5, CVI > 0.59, and CVR > 0.70. Based on the exploratory factor analysis, the final version of the questionnaire included 23 items, and 3 factors were extracted. The scale could predict 51% of the total changes. Conclusions Results of the current study indicated refined structure factor and good reliability for the psychometric adequacy of the teaching performance evaluation questionnaire. The results of the current study can be used by universities as well as other educational institutes to evaluate teachers’ adequacy.

Background and Objectives Snowball sampling is applied when samples with the target characteristics are not easily accessible. This research describes snowball sampling as a purposeful method of data collection in qualitative research. Methods This paper is a descriptive review of previous research papers. Data were gathered using English keywords, including “review,” “declaration,” “snowball,” and “chain referral,” as well as Persian keywords that are equivalents of the following: “purposeful sampling,” “snowball,” “qualitative research,” and “descriptive review.” The databases included Google Scholar, Scopus, Irandoc, ProQuest, Science Direct, SID, MagIran, Medline, and Cochrane. The search was limited to Persian and English articles written between 2005 and 2013. Results The preliminary search yielded 433 articles from PubMed, 88 articles from Scopus, 1 article from SID, and 18 articles from MagIran. Among 125 articles, methodological and non-research articles were omitted. Finally, 11 relevant articles, which met the criteria, were selected for review. Conclusions Different methods of snowball sampling can be applied to facilitate scientific research, provide community-based data, and hold health educational programs. Snowball sampling can be effectively used to analyze vulnerable groups or individuals under special care. In fact, it allows researchers to access susceptible populations. Thus, it is suggested to consider snowball sampling strategies while working with the attendees of educational programs or samples of research studies.

Background: There is a paucity of literature regarding the medical students’ perspectives on web-based training of clinical reasoning. Objectives: This study aimed to describe the implementation of a web-based training course of clinical reasoning for medical students and to evaluate their satisfaction with the program. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2018. Fifty internal medicine interns were consecutively enrolled. The study consisted of two phases. The first phase focused on the development of a web-based training module of clinical reasoning. The second focused on evaluating the trainee’s satisfaction with the virtual course. The educational content of the program was prepared by an expert panel and incorporated in a web-based educational tool designed for virtual training purposes. The students’ satisfaction with the virtual course was assessed using a questionnaire. Each item of the questionnaire was scored from 0 (0) to 1.5 (100). The content validity of the questionnaire determined by an expert panel, and its reliability was measured. Results: The mean score of each item of the questionnaire ranged from 77.3 to 85.3 which showed that the participants agreed with the items of the questionnaire. Also, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was excellent in nine items of the questionnaire, good in four items, and acceptable in three items. The intraclass correlation coefficient was also estimated as 0.98.Conclusions: The participants were satisfied with the web-based training tool for clinical reasoning, used in the present study. The developed questionnaire also showed good validity and reliability for the assessment of trainees’ satisfaction with the web-based training module of clinical reasoning.

Background: Interprofessional collaboration is defined as a key component of a successful team in healthcare system. Interprofessional collaboration facilitates healthcare team members to provide the effective and safe healthcare services. Objectives: This study aimed at investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and attitudes toward interprofessional communication and collaboration in learners of different disciplines. Methods: This cross-sectional study carried out in Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in 2020. In the first phase, the psychometrics properties of the scales; attitudes toward healthcare teams and self-efficacy in interprofessional collaboration and communication were evaluated. In the second phase, the survey were conducted among 178 residents, medical interns, and nursing students. Results: The validity and reliability of the instruments were confirmed. According to exploratory factor analysis, the items of the self-efficacy in interprofessional collaboration and communication scale were classified into four areas; effective communication with the patient, patient involvement, interprofessional teamwork, and interprofessional interaction. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.74 and 0.95, and interclass correlation coefficient was 0.76 and 0.90 for attitudes toward healthcare teams and self-efficacy in interprofessional collaboration and communication scales, respectively. The mean scores of self-efficacies (2.10±0.41) and attitudes toward health care teams (2.17 ±0.43) were at a weak level, and a significant relationship was observed between them (P=0.001, r = 0.80).Conclusion: Regards the confirmation of validation of the tools, the validated instruments can be utilized for formative evaluation of learners in different fields in order to provide the necessary platform for the promotion of interprofessional collaboration behavior in clinical teams.
